Odometer Reading – Claiming travel deductions

They’re also part of your tax returns

If you’re a taxpayer who claims a travel deduction for work, we remind you to record those odometer readings no later than 28 February 2018.

Logbook information

Your logbook plays an important role in doing this, so ensure it contains the correct information relating to business travel, namely:

  1. Date of travel
  2. Kilometers travelled
  3. Travel details, specifically the reason for the trip

More than one vehicle

When claiming, it is important to record your vehicle’s opening and closing mileage for each tax year. In the case of more than one vehicle being used for business travel, a separate logbook must be kept for that vehicle’s recordings.

It is important to note that without a logbook, taxpayers will be unable to claim for travel deductions.
